I’m a big fan of role-playing games, with many of my favourite games belonging to this genre, notably The Witcher 3, Morrowind, and Fallout: New Vegas. I tend to prefer single character games, with the first one I played being something like Cadavar or Hired Guns on the Amiga, or Ultima Underworld 2 on the PC.
Player agency, non-linearity, and choice and consequence are a significant part of differentiating games from other forms of media, and what makes games unique. I find that these elements are integral to many role-playing games.
While I’ll happily play both Japanese and Western styles, I tend to prefer Western role-playing games, as in my opinion they focus more heavily on the emergent gameplay and player choice that I prefer. The characters also have better haircuts.
