Tropical Storm Bret formed Monday off the coast of northern South America, the National Hurricane Center said.
Officials said Bret has 40 mph winds and is moving west-northwest at 30 mph. The tropical storm is the first to form during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.
Tropical Storm Arlene formed in April before the official start of hurricane season.
Hurricane hunters said in an update Monday afternoon that Bret has a well-defined center and now considered a tropical storm.
“While the convective structure has been impressive today, it appears that the window of opportunity for the system to further develop is closing,” the National Hurricane Center said.
The National Hurricane Center said intensification for Bret is not expected to be significant because the storm is forecast to interact with the landmass of Venezuela and increasing vertical shear.
